Hi, there - I'm so glad you're here! I've lived in Shawnee since 1996 and am thankful that I get to call this place home. I am married to my husband, Greg, and have three wonderful children - Maddie and her husband Andrew, Carter, and Chloe. I have two sweet grand-babies - Memphis and Krew. I've been in healthcare since 1994 and have always loved taking care of infants and children. I took the long path to where I am today. I graduated from OSU-OKC with an Associate's in Nursing in 1994, and from Oklahoma Panhandle State with a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing in 2000. I had a fun and challenging career as an RN, with many years spent at OU Children's Hospital. I worked as an RN in the newborn nursery, on the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Unit, in the NICU, and with Medi-flight as a neonatal flight nurse. I loved my time there. I was pregnant with our fourth child while working with Medi-flight in 2008. We found out that spring that our baby had serious heart defects (transposition of the great vessels, atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, and a complicated coronary artery anatomy). At that time, there wasn't a pediatric cardiac surgeon in Oklahoma, so we had to deliver our baby boy in Dallas. Our son, Maverick, was a beautiful, brave soul. He was in the PICU at Medical City Children's from his birthday on September 12th until the week of Christmas, when we flew him back to OU Children's PICU so our family could be back together in Oklahoma. He had almost any imaginable and some unimaginable complications and passed away on February 24, 2009. During those five and one-half months of his life, there were many difficult days with sprinklings of good memories. We had some great care at both places and are still connected to many of Mav's nurses. We also had many days when I felt like my concerns weren't addressed and I felt brushed off - like no one was listening. I realized that if I felt like that after working the positions I had been in, with the knowledge I had - I couldn't imagine what parents without medical knowledge felt like. After going through that experience and losing our son, I vowed when I went back to work in healthcare, I would never make a parent feel like I felt. After losing him, I couldn't make myself go back to Medi-flight. I decided it was time to go back to nurse practitioner school.
I completed my Master's of Science in Nursing through University of South Alabama's Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program. I am a board certified pediatric nurse practitioner and have been caring for children in our community since 2011. This is my calling. I believe there is a reason for everything in this life and there is no doubt that the struggles I have faced though the loss of a child have made me a more compassionate provider. The biggest lesson I learned through my time with Maverick is that it's imperative to listen to the parent. I embrace this lesson in my practice every day. The healthcare system we are in now encourages hurried appointments and discourages meaningful connections and dialog with families. I am here to give an option for families seeking a different level of care. I look forward to working with you and your family to help your child/children reach their greatest potential.
All my best,
Julianne
